Home Organizing with the KonMari® Method

When you organize your home using the KonMari® Method, you achieve lasting change in the usefulness of your space, but more importantly, in your mindset as you move forward.

This method of home organization encourages tidying by category - not by location in your home.

You keep only those things that speak to the heart, and you discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service — then let them go.

You change your habits and you change your relationship with your belongings, and along the way you realize that now your space is filled only with items that serve and support you and your vision. This ultimately creates more space and time for the work and hobbies that ignite your passion, and for the people you love and share space with.

The Six Basic Rules of Tidying

Marie Kondo outlines six rules for organizing your home (and great news: the first two are just thinking steps!)

  1. Commit yourself to tidying up.

Anwen’s advice: The desire must come from within you. It makes no difference if your housemates or loved ones are on board. You do you, and it will inspire. Go full in, knowing that the time you devote will be well worth it.

  2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle.

Anwen’s advice: Just visualize your ideal day. How would it begin if you faced no limitations? What makes you feel good? What excites you? What do you feel enthusiastic about? What do you wish you had time for?

  3. Finish discarding first.

Anwen’s advice: Although it is exciting to rearrange and ultimately change your space, we must really practice patience and focus on the importance of first choosing what to keep and later deciding where to put it.

  4. Tidy by category, not by location.

Anwen’s advice: This one, right here, is the key.

  5. Follow the right order.

Anwen’s advice: Stay the course. Keep coming back to the category at hand.

  6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy.

Anwen’s advice: Does holding, using, looking at, loaning, or being in the presence of this item make you feel lighter, more confident, helpful, or inspired? Does this item serve as a tool to make your life easier or work more efficiently? Does it spark a peaceful memory, or carry love and history that has importance to you? And maybe it once did, but does it still?
